The use of adaptive management (AM) is becoming increasingly important as a follow-through activity in meeting National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) compliance requirements. Environmental impact statements, and in some cases, environmental assessments, are including commitments to the implementation of AM programs, including feedback mechanisms and adjustments, as a means of reducing future uncertainties. There is no single AM program that will meet the wide-ranging needs for enhanced learning and its application. Rather, fundamental principles and process elements need to be adaptively applied to specific plans or projects in their unique settings. This AM series currently includes two courses, with the first one addressing fundamentals for planning, implementation, and usage of gathered information in follow-through decision making. The second course includes summary information from several case studies from the United States, along with a planning framework for a targeted monitoring program. Both of the current courses in this series are designed for practitioners who need to know “how-to-do” AM.
