The use of adaptive management (AM) is becoming increasingly important as a follow-through activity in meeting National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) compliance requirements. Environmental impact statements, and in some cases, environmental assessments, are including commitments to the implementation of AM programs, including feedback mechanisms and adjustments, as a means of reducing future uncertainties. There is no single AM program that will meet the wide-ranging needs for enhanced learning and its application. Rather, fundamental principles and process elements need to be adaptively applied to specific plans or projects in their unique settings.
